Connections. March 2022

We’re packing our bags for the Fair!

The Book Fair is around the corner, and we’re itching to get back out there. You may have seen in our grand relaunch of Connections that we’re taking bookings for meetings at the Fair. The lines are still open – so get booking below and let’s have a chat.

We’re excited to share some important news – namely a particular campaign we’re getting behind – in this issue of Connections. The cold months are behind us, and with the recent (and overdue) sun comes the promise of an exciting Spring and Summer for publishing. Let’s get started…

Thanks,
Finn

2. Independents Day

This month, The Bookseller announced the shortlists for the British Book Awards. We’re particularly excited, as ever, to be sponsoring the Independent Publisher of the Year Award. This year the industry has seen exciting growth, so the competition is strong across the board. It’s been a joy to behold the good work of independent publishers in recent years.

We wish the best of luck to all the publishers on the shortlist, and look forward to watching them fight to the death. Wait… they’re not doing that? Oh. Still… ?

Listening is reading too.

Simple as that. If you’re wondering what this stamp means, here’s an overview. This stamp represents a campaign to remove VAT from Audiobooks – #ScrapAudiobookTax.

We’re standing firmly behind this message, sharing the petition as far as possible in order to make Audiobooks available and accessible to everyone. Listening is reading too. Not a luxury. Treating it as such is clear discrimination against visually impaired and dyslexic readers.

Print books and eBooks have been exempted from tax, so all we need to do is turn up the volume and make some noise for fair reading across all formats. Your signature can help make a difference and encourage change with the powers that be. Get involved ?

Launch days ?

We worked with Chelsea Green Publishing on a grand marketing fest on the 8th March. We posted all about Chelsea Green’s books, showcasing their audio range with a spattering of social media content shared in tandem.

We shared an Audiobook Preview Video, with book highlights, a bookmark post, and a selection chosen by us highlighted in publisher highlights. Chelsea Green are also running a promotion for two free audiobooks throughout the month. Chelsea Green will continue the action throughout the month, using our audio snippet and other content to drive more engagement.

We vouch for Vouchers

You can discount, on us ?

Our voucher functionality is key to running successful promotions on digital titles. We often bang on about the value of incentivising readers: maybe with a free eBook or Audiobook, maybe a discount of your digital titles. You’re likely doing this already, but we find that selling direct requires an unfamiliar shift in mindset for many publishers – to think like a retailer.

We’re keen to make this shift as smooth as possible. If you’re new to Glassboxx and want to set up a marketing launch like we’ve described, we’d love to offer you a month of free gratis copies – meaning we’ll waive the fulfilment cost. Or if you’re looking for new ideas for campaigns, we’ve got energetic, caffeinated marketing enthusiasts poised to throw ideas your way and collaborate with you.

Newsletters

We were pleased to work with Birlinn Publishing this month on supporting their announcement of selling direct with Glassboxx. Birlinn have a strong reader newsletter, and accepted our offer to put together some content to sit within it. They supplied us with their banner dimensions, and we created some options. We also sent a bit of Glassboxxified copy for them to amend as they needed.

The email linked to an eBook landing page, which is using one of our banners. This was great fun to pull together with the folks at Birlinn. They have a distinct marketing set up already, so they were clear on where they wanted us to fit in, and we were happy to oblige.

Like Birlinn Publishing, you’re good at what you do, we’re simply keen to get stuck in and support you. We’re more than happy to discuss ideas around supporting your newsletters, just drop us a line.
